CBRC Biennial Conference

The 17th Biennale of the "Cancer Biology Research Center"  at the "Royal Rimonim - Dead Sea " 11-14 November 2015.

Over 300 Israeli scientists took part in this year's conference primarily aimed at promoting research to eradicate cancer disease,  through direct contact between researchers, clinicians, students, members of the medical centers at Tel Aviv University and the faculties of medicine, life sciences and exact sciences.  

This year, the conference hosted nine international scientists;  Seven distinguished  scientists  from "Princess Margaret Cancer Centre"  in Toronto, Canada,  took part in various panels, lectures and future collaboration meetings.  Led by the Interim Director of Research Bradly Wouters we were privileged to hear lectures from John Dick, Norman Iscove, Rama Khoka,  Catherin O'brien,  Robert Rottapel and Rodger Tiedermann.  From the Medical Center in Luxembourg  we were honored to hear Mario Dicato , and Dr. Oliver Krieter, manager of clinical programs at Roche also gave an exciting presentation.  

Israel Prize winner Prof. Zelig Eshhar presented his work in the special opening session.  Dr. John Dick presented his groundbreaking work on the subject of cancer stem cells and his colleague Dr. Robert Rottapel lectured about the mechanisms of signaling and control of cancer cells.  Fascinating lectures relating to immunotherapy aspects were given in a session chaired by the University Vice President for Research and Development Prof. Yoav Henis.   A special session led by two leading Hematology Doctors,  Prof. Pia Raanani and Dr. Maya Koren-Michovitz, was dedicated to hematological malignancies.  Leading scientists and clinicians such as Prof. Shai Izraeli, Prof. Dan Peer and Prof. Yair Herishanu presented their ground breaking work in the field during this session.  Additional presentation, in sessions relating to diagnostics and therapeutics, pre-clinical models,  bioinformatics,  were given by some of the promising new generation of clinicians and scientists fighting cancer disease.   Special discussion panels  about new technologies for advanced treatment and innovative models as a tool for research were conducted with the participation of the best oncologists, physicians and researchers such as Prof. Eitan Friedman, Professor Meir Lahav, Prof. Boaz Tadmor and Dr. Gal Markel.  Moreover, young and brilliant scientists and oncologists presented unique projects that combine the most advanced research technologies that may eventually become a reality in identifying, treating and curing cancer.

The conference also provided an important forum for research students to present their work and meet with senior researchers as part of unique forums such as MEET THE PROFESSOR, FLASH SESSION, BRAIN STORMING.  Six of the outstanding abstracts sent by students that were selected for lectures won special prizes.  In addition, over 70 posters were presented, describing exciting projects of graduate students in various fields of cancer research.

Conference participants and guests took active part in the diverse social activities that were offered.  Two stimulating lectures were given by the former Police Commissioner Mr.  Yohanan Danino,  and by the renowned Israeli writer Mr. Meir  Shalev.  A special guest concert by Danny Sanderson and his band lifted the spirit of all the guests.  Special tours were offered during Saturday and the participants enjoyed beautiful hikes  to Masada and Ein- Bokek.

Through informal meetings, conversations around the dinner table, and exciting social events, a successful conference was held which attracted some of the best scientists and doctors in the field. The meeting was supported by generous contributions of some of the leading international and local pharmaceutical companies as well as the Dotan Foundation, and non-profit organization like the Israeli Cancer Association and I-CORE.
